The Impact of an Exhausting Election Season

Politics and elections create elaborate, exhausting confusion on both sides. This year’s election took a toll on everyone who cared about the outcome. Things are going to change. As Dorothy said, “We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto.” And you can’t run off to “Your Own Private Idaho” either.

Now that it’s over, we’re all waiting to see what will happen. In the meantime, it’s vital to take care of yourself. Intentional self-care has never been more urgent, regardless of who you supported in the election.

This advice also aligns with my broader mission to help artists on a holistic level that transcends traditional marketing techniques. While I still value those strategies, I’m now integrating ways to enrich artists’ lives at a deeper, more meaningful level. Examples of this shift are in my blog posts and courses that support developing articulate awareness and creating impactful partnerships. I aim to enhance artists’ methods by incorporating approaches that strengthen their lives, promoting well-being as an essential part of sustainable success.

Why Self-Care Is Essential in Times of Change

The following thoughts aim to help you heal. It’s a perfect time for all of us to ensure we care for ourselves. While saying, “Without you, you have nothing, and neither do those who need you,” may seem obvious, it’s a reminder that many of us need right now.

Adapting to Life’s Cycles and Challenges

As the relentless heat finally gives way to cooler days in my desert Southwest and hurricane fears subside on the East Coast, I’m reminded that tough times, like nature’s harshest conditions, don’t last forever. With each season, the landscape changes, and so do we. Global pandemics, rising costs, and political divides have pushed us to our limits, but there’s hope. Now is a time for relief and renewal; self-care can be a guiding light. It’s a reminder that even in the face of change, we can find stability and comfort in routines that sustain and uplift us.

The Foundation of Balance and Well-Being

In these moments of transition, the value of self-care and balance becomes evident. These elements aren’t just luxuries but the bedrock of our well-being. In a constantly shifting world, self-care allows us to remain steady, providing a foundation for career success, creative growth, and a life that fulfills both personally and professionally. It’s not just about surviving but thriving. Intentional self-care equips us to show up fully for ourselves, our families, our communities, and the careers we’re passionate about, empowering us to face challenges with resilience and confidence.

The Ripple Effect of Self-Care on Creativity

Self-care has a ripple effect, extending beyond personal well-being to enhance creativity and problem-solving. When we’re rested, inspired, and balanced, creativity flows naturally, leading to richer ideas and more profound work. Try incorporating “creative pauses” throughout the day:

  • Take a 5-minute nature break to refresh your mind.
  • Stretch briefly every hour to release tension.
  • Practice deep breathing to calm your thoughts and restore focus.
  • Try science-backed music for personalized neurostimulation. I use Brain.fm regularly with good results. The link is for a free 30-day trial. I bought a lifetime deal years ago and get nothing if you join.

The Health Benefits of Self-Care for Longevity in Work

Alongside creativity, the physical health benefits of self-care play a crucial role in sustaining a long art career. Self-care can reduce stress, improve cardiovascular health, and strengthen immune function—all essential for keeping up with the demands of an art career.

Small daily “health check-ins” can help sustain energy.

  • Drink a glass of water at regular intervals.
  • Pause to take 3–5 deep breaths during your day.
  • Stand up and stretch to improve circulation.

Self-Care as Emotional Resilience

Another often overlooked benefit of self-care is its power to build emotional resilience. In a world where the art industry can be highly competitive and unpredictable, self-care practices like journaling help artists process emotions, release stress, and stay positive. Try taking five minutes a day to:

  • Write down a gratitude list to remain grounded.
  • Reflect on your feelings to gain clarity.
  • Record any challenges and breakthroughs to track personal growth.

Redefining Success to Include Self-Care

The art business values hard labor and counts sales, but now it’s time to reframe success to include self-care and mindfulness. Sustainability in art requires competence, emotional resilience, and a sense of purpose for inspiration and invention to flourish. Successful artists take breaks to help refocus and balance their work, lives, and dreams, recognizing that such self-care increases creativity and productivity.

Essential Self-Care Practices for Creative Professionals

Boundaries and Time Management

Set clear divisions between studio or business time and personal life. Include “white space” in your calendar, such as a few hours on the weekend for a hobby or a day off for self-care, reflection, and spontaneity. These are ideals and practical steps to achieve balance and purpose in life and work.

Morning Mindfulness

Before tackling demands, create centering rituals to start your day, such as meditation or deep breathing. Morning mindfulness sets a peaceful tone, allowing you to approach the day with clarity and focus.

Physical Wellness

To maintain energy and clarity, combine exercise like walking—which doubles as idea-processing time—with proper nutrition and sufficient sleep. Physical wellness is essential for both creativity and productivity.

Meaningful Connections

Balance solitary creative work with quality time with loved ones, friends, and colleagues. These connections nurture your support system and broaden your interests beyond art, reinforcing your well-being.

Making Self-Care a Routine, Not an Afterthought

Self-care isn’t just a crisis response; it’s most effective as a consistent, integrated routine. Regularly practicing self-care means that when challenges arise, you’re better prepared to handle them with resilience and confidence.

Consider creating a personal “self-care checklist” with weekly commitments, such as:

  • Engaging in physical activity like yoga, walking, or biking.
  • Taking a few hours for hobbies or interests beyond work.
  • Spending time on creative play without pressure to produce.

Digital Detox: Creating Space for Charging

Our minds can become fatigued by the constant barrage of digital information. This is where the concept of ‘digital detox’ comes in. A digital detox involves taking a break from digital devices like smartphones, computers, and tablets to reduce stress and improve focus. Create ‘digital-free zones’ or set specific times to unplug, such as the first hour of the morning or the last hour before bed. Doing this gives your mind space to recharge, improve focus, and reduce stress. It’s like giving your brain a vacation from the digital world, allowing it to rest and rejuvenate.

Defining Boundaries and Learning to Say No

Setting boundaries is vital in prioritizing self-care, and sometimes that means learning to say “no” to avoid over-commitment. Regularly assess your obligations and, when necessary, politely decline invitations that could drain your energy. Clear boundaries create space for high-priority projects and quality relationships; you must stay balanced for the rest.

Integrating Play and Joy into Self-Care

Self-care isn’t only about rest; it’s also about finding joy. Engaging in fun activities, whether trying a new art medium, exploring a hobby like gardening or cooking, or simply playing a game, adds joy to life and is essential for maintaining a positive outlook—schedule time for creative experimentation without pressure to keep your passion for art alive.

Reflecting on Progress and Practicing Self-Compassion

Reflection and self-compassion are essential aspects of self-care. Monthly or quarterly self-reflection rituals—revisiting goals, acknowledging achievements, and practicing self-compassion for areas of improvement—help you assess progress and affirm that growth is as valuable as the destination.

Resilience in a Divisive World

In our increasingly tribal world, where we experience the fragility of civility, resilience through rituals and routines becomes more crucial. Can we build a business, much less bridge cultural divides through art, without first tending to our well-being?

Why Self-Care Is a Sound Business Strategy

These concepts are more than feel-good advice—they are sound business strategies. When self-care nurtures your happiness, your personal and business relationships naturally improve. Setting healthy boundaries is a proven formula for producing consistent work and living a more joyful life. Prioritizing self-care isn’t an elite luxury; it’s essential for personal and professional well-being. Embrace it as a vital part of your journey!

Redefining Success in Art and Life

As we enter the year’s final months, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what success means. What if we measured success not just by sales and exhibitions but by sustainable practices that support our creativity and financial health?

The art world has constantly challenged established norms. In a time of burnout and division, we can model a balanced approach to achievement that recognizes self-care as essential for lasting success.

In Art and Life, Balance Matters

After all, in art and life, the spaces between the marks often define the image as much as the marks themselves. Remember that a strong foundation of self-care is the key to long-lasting success and fulfillment. It makes you better and more available to yourself, your family, and your community. It’s free to embrace. As the saying goes, “Just do it!”

Be well, take care.
